A number of books and articles have been written about different sports officials, both in connection with the Olympic Games and otherwise, on the basis of a number of different aspects. (1) In most cases the focus is on the sports official's deeds and events while he was active in his own particular sports organization. More rarely the sports official's style of leadership is studied. This article analyzes the leadership style of the IOC delegate and later IOC President J. Sigfrid Edstrom (1870-1964), and what expression this style took both in the professional and sporting spheres. I will focus on the following question: How is it that Sigfrid Edstrom, a person and sports official from a small country like Sweden with approximately 8 million inhabitants, managed to become both President of the IAAF for several decades (1913-1946) and later also IOC President(1946-1952), two of the most prestigious posts in the world of sport? According to my interpretation it is a question of Edstrom's charisma and charismatic leadership style, which distinguish him from other contemporary sports officials and make him unique.
